Drowsy driving is an impairment problem, not a motivation problem. If your brain needs sleep, tricks will not reliably keep you safe.

What does not work

Windows down, loud music, snacks, phone calls, and conversation may wake you briefly, but they do not reverse sleepiness. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone; these are common habits, just not dependable safety tools.

What does work

  • Treat the root cause. Untreated sleep apnea, insomnia, shift-work issues, and sedating medications all raise risk.
  • Protect total sleep time. Most adults need at least 7 hours on a regular schedule.
  • Use a short nap strategically. A 15 to 20 minute nap in a safe location can improve alertness for a limited period.
  • Consider caffeine before driving. Helpful for some people, but temporary and not a substitute for sleep.
  • Pull over at first warning signs. Heavy eyelids, lane drifting, missed exits, or repeated yawning mean stop now.

Bottom line

If you are sleepy, do not push through. Stop driving and reset safely. Long-term prevention comes from enough sleep and treatment of the underlying sleep issue.
