Most sleep problems make more sense when you see two systems at work: sleep drive and circadian timing. One builds pressure. The other sets the clock.
Sleep drive
Sleep drive is homeostatic pressure. The longer you stay awake, the stronger that pressure becomes. Naps and sleeping in bleed off pressure, which can make nighttime sleep harder.
Think hunger: if you snack all afternoon, dinner appetite drops. If you nap late, bedtime sleepiness drops.
Circadian rhythm
Your circadian rhythm is the internal timing system that signals when to feel alert and when to feel sleepy. Light exposure, wake time, and schedule consistency anchor this system. Some people are naturally earlier, others later, but everyone benefits from a stable anchor.
Why it matters
Insomnia often worsens when these systems drift apart. Irregular hours confuse circadian timing. Extra time in bed weakens sleep drive and bed-sleep conditioning. CBT-I works by realigning both systems.
Practical steps
- Keep a fixed wake time every day, including weekends.
- Limit naps, especially late-day naps.
- Use morning light exposure to anchor your clock.
- Match time in bed to actual sleep ability, then expand gradually if needed.
Bottom line
Sleep drive and circadian rhythm are the foundation, not the whole building. When you support both consistently, sleep becomes more predictable.
